There are a number of professional trade bodies which exist to govern and oversee Chimney Sweeps in the UK.
One such trade body is HETAS who are the official body recognised by the UK Government to approve biomass /solid fuel domestic heating appliances, services including registration of competent installers and servicing businesses along with recommending fuels.
Sweeps who are members of NACS (the National Association of Chimney Sweeps), the Guild of Master Chimney Sweeps and also APICS (the Association of Professional and Independent Chimney Sweeps) are listed in the HETAS Guide and are allowed to use a HETAS Approved Chimney Sweep logo on their marketing material.
NACS was formed in 1982 and is a professional trade association with a current membership in excess of 400 members. NACS helps to promote high standards for the sweeping, the inspection and the ongoing maintenance of chimneys.
Another body which governs and seeks to standardise and protect through it industry regulations is ICS (The Institute of Chimney Sweeps). Through its regular training and auditing of it’s membership it offers professional membership to chimney sweeps across the country.
